The lure of indigo is strong — the classic blue and white combination found in many Japanese textiles is cool, crisp, and so appealing.

CLASSIC, COOL BLUE AND WHITE PAIRED WITH MODERN DESIGN - From classic kimonos to denim jeans, indigo has been used by many cultures for dyeing cloth, and the Japanese have refined the use of indigo to an art form. This is the class to use all those lovely blue and white shibori fabrics you’ve dyed yourself or use carefully curated blue and white fabrics from your stash.

    Saturday, May 17:

Intro to Heat Set Machine Applique with

    Grace Errea

In this class you will learn to use a “collage with templates” technique. It is an innovative and revolutionary new technique, you will use nothing else once you try it. It is easy, foolproof and the results are always amazing.

This technique leaves the quilt and the fabric soft and manageable, not stiff and board-like, as fusible webs and glues do. The best, however, is that you can do raw edge applique without any fraying edges!! This technique produces a no-fray raw edge applique as a result.

You will be amazed and love the process and the results and will never go back to fusing, gluing, or pinning and stitching with nylon thread, ever again!

    Scrap Vortex with

    Sandra Bruce

We all have bins/boxes/drawers of scraps that we'd love to put into use! This technique, called Scrap Vortex, is a way to use them up (or at least, try!). In the workshop, you will bring your scraps to use and share to make yours varied and top-notch. I will demo different techniques to use, such as curved piecing, wonky log cabin blocks, and how to fussycut to make a great looking block, among others. The beauty of this technique is you can make it any size, any color combo, and there's unlimited freedom in your piecing!

    The Elemental Coat with

    Teresa Coates

This coat pattern was designed by a quilter, for quilters. Using techniques that are already familiar to quilters and avoiding construction methods that can intimidate new (or dormant) garment sewists, this coat is an easy and versatile make that will leave students feeling pleased and proud. We’ll begin by discussing style options: collar/hood, cropped/ hip/full length and full/cuffed sleeves, then move on to layout options. Using traced patterns, we’ll show how to decide on the most pleasing layouts for coat pieces and how to make the most of the quilt you’ve got.

Students can use a finished quilt, quilted yardage, prequilted fabric or medium-weight yardage (e.g. denim, canvas, corduroy).
